A scene I wrote, taken out of context

INT. HIGH SCHOOL - GUIDENCE COUNSELOR'S OFFICE - DAY

The COUNSELOR hands 16 year-old NORMAN FITTLESCHITZ a report card:

ENGLISH - A
SCIENCE - A
MATH - A
HISTORY - A

COUNSELOR
See this boy? What happened to him?

NORMAN
I don't know?

COUNSELOR
He was on his way to valedictorian.

NORMAN
Yeah. D*mn shame.

COUNSELOR
Grades four to seven. A prodigy. Nothing
like I'd ever seen.

NORMAN
Well - you ain't seen nothin yet.

Counselor's tone changes. This isn't a game.

COUNSELOR
Repeating Senior Year isn?t exactly the
kinda thing that makes a resume shine.

NORMAN
I know. But repeating every year since
8th grade. That?s gotta at least get me
into Guiness.

COUNSELOR
Let me be the first to tell you - that
is nothing to be proud of.

NORMAN
I have plenty to be proud of.

COUNSELOR
Such as?

NORMAN
My preparation for the future. Machines are the
future. Computers. Super computers.
How?s your hand-eye coordination? Mine?s
perfect. This place doesnt offer what I need.
The real education is the one I?m getting at home.

COUNSELOR
And what would that be?

NORMAN
Inter-galactic warfare. Space flight and
navigation. And much much more...

EXT. DEEP SPACE

Norman pilots a simple space craft, blasting away through a crowded asteroid field.
As each blast pulverises the asteroids, they break apart. From one to two. Two to four. Into tinier pieces.

Norman dominates the onslaught. He's in control and loving it.

EXT. UNKNOWN PLANET

Norman?s ship is just a few feet from the ground, facing upward as it glides side to side, avoiding enemy fire from an army of giant aliens slowly making their way down to him in an ominous, lateral rhythm. He has only three stationary shields to cover under as he returns fire on the gruesome creatures.

The few remaining creatures bear down on him, as he hits them with all he?s got.

Intense.

He unleashes a battle cry. Screaming for his life!

NORMAN
AAAAAAAGGHH!!

BACK TO THE COUNSELOR'S OFFICE

NORMAN
AAAAAAAAAGGHH!!

Then he stops. Regains composure. And continues the same discussion...

NORMAN
But?s it?s not all about space.
Sometimes it?s a little strange.

COUNSELOR
Sometimes?

NORMAN
Yeah. Like there?s this one giant ape.
I don?t why - but this guy?s really
pissed-off at me. I guess you could
say - he?s going ape-sh*t.

Counselor raises his eye brows.

NORMAN
But I?m the one who should be mad cause
this frickin monkey kidnapped my woman and
is holding holding her hostage!! So I'm
trying to get to her, and hes hurling
barrels at me! What the f*ck!?

COUNSELOR
-Okay. Enough.

why exactly have you posted the scene? is there some piont to it being out of context?

Yes. It's not the beginning of the script. Nor the end. And I didn't want to give a synopsis of the story.

Much of the script is still in early drafts and more of an outline than a screenplay.

Perhaps including the phrase "taken out of context" is what has you so curious.

This part of the scene is the only SCI-FI shoot-em up action stuff in any of my scripts, thus far. It's my contribution to the most dominant theme on this forum.

I don't understand the Guinness line. Also if you're talking about the Black stuff, you spelt it wrong.

It seems ok. It's very hard to judge though. Where are these other sci-fi scripts?

You're right. I did spell it wrong. But it's not the drink.

That's Okay.
One important thing I left out was that this takes places in the early 80's. In America. Perhaps there are references within that might not be global. Which would actually be a surprise to me. I'm not really seeking good or bad criticism. Just wondering if the references could be specifically identified.

I don't have other sci-fi scripts.

Most of what I write is drama/dark comedy, with most of the violence implied, or happening off-screen.

Do I understand you want to have the computergame references identified? Well, those are clearly references to Asteroids and KingKong. If you didn't ment this, sorry for this post [img]smile.gif[/img]

Not KING KONG.
ASTEROIDS is one of them.

And there's yet a third game. But I'm not expecting everyone to treat this like a riddle or anything like that. If you've read the scene, and happen to pick up what each game is, then fine. If not - no big deal.

I'm just curious to see if the game's are identifiable without me having to be literal. If not, it's either my fault for lack of clarity, or the games are so outdated that younger people won't know, or their popularity hasn't reached far beyond America.
